Background information on "Entente Florale"

Keyword "Entente Florale"
In 1975, England and France established the European competition Entente Florale. Since then more and more countries and their towns and municipalities have been taking part in this contest. The state capital Düsseldorf first participated in the national competition in 2007 and immediately took away the trophy. This enabled Düsseldorf to gain entry into the European competition 2008. The organisers and sponsors of the German competition are the Central Association for Horticulture (Zentralverband Gartenbau), the German Tourism Association (Deutscher Tourismusverband), the Association of Towns and Municipalities (Städte- und Gemeindebund) and the German Conference of Cities (Deutscher Städtetag).
Around 20,000 towns and villages from twelve countries take part in the European competition and its national preliminaries every year. The aim of the competition is to make the towns and villages look nicer and to improve the quality of life for their inhabitants through the green development.
German towns have been successfully taking part in the European competition "Towns and municipalities in greenery and flowers - Entente Florale" since 1994. Grevenbroich finished in third place in 1995. In 1996 Duderstadt was the winner and in 1998 Wiedenbrück received the silver medal. Augsburg in 1997, Fulda in 1999, Heilbronn in 2000, Bad Säckingen in 2003, Bad Kissingen in 2004, Potsdam in 2005 and Kiel in 2006 were all awarded with "Gold". In 2007 Münster picked up first prize in the competition and now in 2008 Düsseldorf wants to get involved.
A jury made up of twelve members will run the rule over the participating towns and villages and will determine who takes away gold, silver or bronze and the trophy. Each participating country delegates a juror to the jury.
