Düsseldorf wins in national competition

Düsseldorf won the national competition "Entente Florale - Our City in Bloom". As a result the provincial capital will represent Germany at the European competition next year against competitors from eleven other countries. Mayor Joachim Erwin received the gold medal at the national competition Entente Florale in Mainz on Tuesday 21 August 2007.

Lord Mayor Joachim Erwin celebrates the gold medal with representatives of Düsseldorf in Mainz after receiving the award from Federal Minister Horst Seehofer and Chairman of the Entente committee Erwin Beyer.

"This is a wonderful day for Düsseldorf. It is great that we stood out as a garden city. This success was only made possible by the people of Düsseldorf, who got actively involved. I would like to thank everyone for their contribution. I'm certain that together we will make as good an impression in Europe next year as we have today," explained Lord Mayor Joachim Erwin after the award ceremony. The City Council proposes making a further million Euros available for projects as part of Entente Florale 2008.

Along with 24 other towns, the provincial capital Düsseldorf applied last year to take part in the national competition Entente Florale 2007, a green competition for cities and towns. Since then the green areas of the city have been smartened up. Investment did not just consist of city funds - the green budget was increased by a million Euros and an additional 620,000 Euros was made available for Entente Florale. The involvement of so many citizens in the competition has also been essential.

On 5 July, a jury for the Entente Florale, made up of eight members, spent the whole day running the rule over the green areas of Düsseldorf and assessing them. In total four such juries visited the 25 participating towns in Germany. They decided who would receive gold, silver and bronze and chose which provincial capital would take away the trophy.
