The Hofgarten - Green island in the city
Düsseldorf's first garden, which was established in the 16th century, is today located right in the middle of the city centre. The Hofgarten is ideal for taking a breather during expeditions in the shopping streets close by. In summer, in particular, the cooling effect of the trees, ponds and fountains is a welcome relief from the heat.
Lantz'scher Park - Nature, art, recreation and enjoyment
Those interested in art can also get their money's worth in the park in Lohausen. Historical and modern objects of art - for example, by Richard Serra - form a contrast to the old tree population. The Lantz'sche Park (German page) was designed as an English garden around a classical manor-house. Children can run riot to their hearts' content in the playground.
Sculptures, Japanese Garden and fountains
The Nordpark (German pages) is one of the most splendid parks in the State capital: extensive flower beds, monuments, fountains, a playground and various works of art attract lots of visitors in good weather.
If you are looking for peace and quiet, head for the Japanese garden or relax in one of the many play areas or on the sunbathing lawns. The Aquazoo (German pages) is also located in the Nordpark.
The Südpark Sports, barbecues and natural habitats
Ponds with beautiful, rolling banks, alleys, thick bushes, serpentine pathways with surprising views - that's the Südpark (German pages), a popular excursion spot among Düsseldorfers. Be it the petting zoo, the playgrounds, sunbathing lawns, natural habitats, natural landscapes or the rose garden - the former home of the Federal Garden Show has everything for a great day outdoors. Barbecuing fans meet in the northern part of the park for grilling, in the Volksgarten, while hobby botanists and scientists are drawn towards the botanical garden close by.
Strolling in the palace grounds
Those interested in historical parks must visit the parks in the palaces Schloss Benrath, Schloss Eller and Schloss Heltorf. They have been laid in the English or French styles.
The park of the Schloss Mickeln in Himmelgeist is another terrific place for a walk, which you can extend right up to the Rhine.
Games, sports and rock climbing - Düsseldorf's leisure parks
Table-tennis, mini-golf or ball games - there's plenty of space in the leisure parks (German pages) in the Heerdt borough of the city or in the Ulenbergstraße in Flehe for sports, games and fun. Young friends of animals can observe goats, geese, guinea pigs, hares, dogs and pigs in the woods of Niederheid, or go for a horse ride.
Other parks in the city
The parks in Düsseldorf are the "green lungs" and recreational spots right in the middle of the city. Visit the Zoopark in Düsseltal or the Ostpark in Grafenberg, which is very popular especially when the rhododendrons bloom. No matter where you are in Düsseldorf - the nearest park is never far.

Lush green, fresh air, the twittering of birds - to get back to nature off and on, there's no need to leave the city. The sometimes small, sometimes large oases are suitable for a breather during a shopping trip, for afternoon barbecues or even for a picnic. Allow us to describe the most beautiful parks.
