Radschläger - Symbolic figure of the city
The symbol of Düsseldorf, the Radschläger (cartwheeler), can be found in several forms in the city: there are Radschläger fountains (on Burgplatz and Martin Luther Platz), a door knocker at the Lambertus Church, an annual Radschläger contest and off and on, a couple of boys and girls on the road looking to add to their pocket money with "eene Penning" per cartwheel. Some bakeries have the symbol made in marzipan and chocolate. There are also Radschläger souvenirs in the online shop of Düsseldorf Marketing & Tourismus GmbH.
Something spicy - Mostert
Mostert is a special handcrafted mustard. That's where it gets its incomparable taste. The Düsseldorfer buys his Mostert from Gewürzhaus Vogel in Mertensgasse 25. Here, between the spices, sauces and herbs, you are taken to a bygone era, back to the year 1726, when Adam Bernhard Bergrath launched his Mostert, which later became so famous. You can buy the ABB Mostert here.
Killepitsch - High Proof with Cult Status
Killepitsch is a herb liqueur with 42 percent alcohol. In the beginning, it was merely a liqueur that was well-known in the city, served in the local pubs and only available in retail stores; today, Killepitsch is known beyond the borders of Düsseldorf and is exported world-wide. One of the places to seek out to enjoy the fine-herb liqueur is the small sampling pub "Et Kabüffke" on Flingerstraße 1, opposite the brewery "Zum Uerige".
Where's our Altbier?
"Alt" beer is a must in Düsseldorf. In contrast to what you might think from the name, you drink it fresh from the tap, at a temperature of 8 to 10 degrees. This fine brew is available everywhere, freshly filled in 0.33 to 1 litre bottles. It is best to find out for yourself which type of Altbier is your favourite - in the Old Town or in one of the small breweries.
