Theatre & drama
The Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus also stages plays of contemporary authors in addition to the classical repertoire. But if you're in the mood for light comedy, try your luck in the Theater an der Kö, which, with 100,000 visitors a year, leads the ranks of boulevard theatre. Komödie an der Steinstraße is also dedicated to comedy.
Among the smaller theatres, the Theater an der Luegallee in Oberkassel has made a name for itself. The Forum Freies Theater presents extremely varied and unconventional material in both its facilities in Jahnstraße and Kasernenstraße. In the middle of the inner city, greats from cabaret and chanson regularly make appearances in an old, renovated cinema, the Savoy Theater.
Musicals and vaudeville
The Capitol Theater guarantees the best entertainment, with great, successful musicals like "Grease" or "Cabaret", while right on the Rhine, Bernhard Paul, the father of the Roncalli Circus, has given the art of vaudeville a new lease of life in recent years: international artistes perform every evening in the Apollo Varieté.
Opera & dance
The Deutsche Oper am Rhein (German Opera on the Rhine) is a cooperative effort between the cities of Düsseldorf and Duisburg. This means they produce jointly but present locally. This method has been a success for 50 years, both with the classics as well as the so-called "young opera" or ballet. If you are more interested in modern dance, get a ticket for the Tanzhaus NRW. Modern choreographers show off their skills here - from dance theatre to hip hop festivals.
Children and youth theatre
All here? Curious kids can see how Caspar got to the jelly bag cap, or the jelly bag cap to Caspar, in the puppet theatre on Helmholtzstraße. Somewhat older or more experienced theatre fans - and this can also include the parents by all means - should visit the puppet theatre in the Palais Wittgenstein.
Comedy & cabaret
The Kom(m)ödchen, first founded by Kay and Lore Lorentz and host to their first shows, is one of the most well-known political cabarets in Germany and the cradle of later solo comedy artists. Thomas Freitag, Hugo Egon Balder and Harald Schmidt were members of this ensemble at the start of their careers.
Cabaret and comedy can also be seen in the Theater Takelgarn, which is mainly dedicated to the promotion of young cabaret artists.
